In 2022, Heather Boxill-Yakalis, who ran a small home-based childcare center, recognized a significant need for a larger facility in the Oneonta area. Driven by her passion for childcare and community, Heather embarked on a journey to expand her services and provide much-needed support to local families.

Heather began by working with the NYS Department of Education to obtain the necessary license for her new center. She applied for various grants, including a $400,000 NYS Child Care Desert Grant, a $35,000 City of Oneonta Microenterprise Grant, and a $38,000 NYS Stabilization Grant. Additionally, Heather invested $21,500 of her own money to support the expansion. To navigate the complexities of these applications and develop a solid business plan, Heather collaborated with Michelle Catan from the Binghamton SBDC.

Heather’s dedication and hard work paid off, and Yak’s Youth Center opened at a critical time when another local daycare provider was closing. The center quickly filled a void in the community, especially crucial after COVID-19, as many families needed reliable childcare to return to work. Starting with six employees and 25 children, Heather’s center has grown to employ 14 staff members and care for over 70 children daily.

Heather’s commitment to creating a safe, family-friendly, and engaging environment has made Yak’s Youth Center a beloved institution in Oneonta. The center not only provides all-day and after-school care but also plans to open a third shift to accommodate evening and overnight needs if the demand arises.

Heather’s vision and perseverance have transformed her small home-based business into a vital community resource. Her efforts have not gone unnoticed, and she is on track to finalize her MWBE (Minority and Women-Owned Business Enterprise) certification this year, further solidifying her role as a leader in the childcare industry.

The success of Yak’s Youth Center is a testament to Heather’s resilience and dedication to her community. From securing significant funding and navigating regulatory requirements to expanding her team and providing essential services, Heather has demonstrated that with the right support and determination, it’s possible to turn a vision into reality. Today, Yak’s Youth Center stands as a beacon of hope and stability for many families in Oneonta, ensuring that young children have a safe place to learn and grow.
