Marquee Brewing opened in a former pharmacy, featuring vintage decor, dining, and themed nights. The brewery quickly became a local favorite, offering a community space for enjoying locally brewed drinks and food.
Assistance Provided
In August 2022, Cory Clark returned to his hometown of Portville after years on the West Coast, eager to start a brewery focused on hard sodas and seltzers. With prior industry experience and extensive product knowledge, he had previously run a similar mobile business in Washington State.
The client partnered with the SBDC to develop a comprehensive business plan and financial projections. They also assisted with permitting and licensing, though the NYS brewing license process took longer than anticipated. The SBDC connected the client with the local health department to secure a commercial kitchen and provided guidance on applying for grants.
The client successfully received a $35,000 Cattaraugus County MAP grant, which was crucial since he had to use his initial capital to secure a location as part of the liquor license requirement, paying rent for months before approval. This grant was conditional on receiving the liquor license. Additionally, he secured a $50,000 loan from High Point Federal Credit Union.
In July 2023, Marquee Brewing opened its doors in a former pharmacy, complete with unique vintage features like an old-fashioned phone booth and original shelving. The brewery, which has a movie theme, quickly became a beloved local spot where patrons enjoy locally brewed drinks and food. Marquee Brewing offers an area for dining, a small bandstand, and various themed nights, including weekly trivia and football game events, which are particularly popular during the Bills’ season.
The community’s response has been overwhelmingly positive, highlighting the town’s need for such a venue. The SBDC’s assistance was pivotal in navigating the complexities of licensing and securing necessary funding, ensuring the successful launch of Marquee Brewing.
The brewery not only provides a unique and enjoyable experience for customers but also fosters a sense of community in Portville. Marquee Brewing stands as a testament to the power of perseverance, community support, and expert guidance, showcasing how a well-planned venture can thrive even in a small town.
“The SBDC made it easy for me to navigate through a complicated grant application and process. Their recommendations and assistance helped us get what we needed to get our brewery open.”
