Samba New York! is a remarkable success story in the world of performing arts, particularly in the realm of Brazilian samba. Founded in 2003 by percussionist-ethnomusicologist Philip Galinsky, the organization initially focused on live performances, inspired by the vibrant samba schools of Rio Carnaval. Over the years, it has become a leading institution for samba education and performance outside Brazil, reaching millions through its classes, workshops, and performances.

In 2023, Samba New York! worked with the SBDC to enhance marketing, sales, and operations. Founded by Philip Galinsky in 2003, the organization overcame pandemic challenges by launching an online samba academy and expanding global reach. With SBDC support, they secured funding and grew from 1 to 2 full-time employees. Their innovative approach now includes guided tours and community engagement, preserving and promoting Brazilian samba culture.
Samba New York! Story
The company’s journey is marked by its commitment to cultural integrity and exceptional service, led by the husband-and-wife team of Philip and Valerie Galinsky. Philip, known as “Dr. Samba,” brings a unique blend of academic and practical expertise in Brazilian music. His work has not only educated but also transformed the lives of countless students, many of whom have become leaders in their own right.
The pandemic posed a significant challenge to Samba New York!, which had primarily focused on live performances. However, the organization adeptly pivoted to online offerings, launching the “Learn To Play Samba” program in 2023. This innovative online academy provides intensive courses in samba percussion, combining group learning with pre-recorded videos, scores, and personalized feedback from Dr. Samba himself. This transition not only sustained the organization but also expanded its reach globally, allowing students worldwide to immerse themselves in samba culture.
In the fall of 2023, Samba New York! introduced a new revenue stream by offering a guided international tour to their community for the festival in Rio in spring 2024. This move represents a strategic expansion of their services, blending educational and cultural experiences with travel, thereby enhancing their community’s engagement with Brazilian culture.
Valerie Galinsky has been instrumental in the organization’s growth and professionalism. Her background from Martinique and expertise in travel and tourism have been pivotal in coordinating the various aspects of SambaNY’s performances and activities. Her role has been crucial in maintaining the high standards of the company’s shows and in fostering a sense of community among performers, students, and clients.
Together, the Galinskys have built Samba New York! into a dynamic and influential entity in the world of samba. Their approach goes beyond mere performance and instruction; they encourage people to integrate samba culture into their lives, whether momentarily or lifelong. This philosophy, coupled with their innovative response to the challenges posed by the pandemic, has ensured SambaNY’s continued success and influence in promoting and preserving the rich heritage of Brazilian samba.
“For the better part of our time directing and running Samba New York! — which just celebrated its 20 years of existence last year — the SBDC at Baruch College has been there. The various advisors we worked with over the years have helped us successfully navigate so many of the crucial aspects of our business, from financial to organizational to marketing considerations. If it weren’t for the excellent support we received and continue to receive from the SBDC staff, Samba New York! may not have been the success story that it is today.
So, with that, we offer our utmost thanks to the SBDC and all the incredible advisors — from Ben Cox, Ronald Zorrilla, and various others along the way — who gave us their invaluable time, knowledge, encouragement, and support. This has allowed us to continue to make our dreams come true every day, and for that we are most grateful. For any business owner out there who is struggling, you are not alone. Being an entrepreneur isn’t always easy, but the rewards can be tremendous, especially the gift of doing for a living what you love and believe in. And the SBDC can help you do just that. We can’t recommend them enough.”
