Assistance Provided
In 2022, Justin and Kelli Tucker sought help from the Canton SBDC to secure funding for expanding their ranch’s production. Their advisor, Michelle Collins, guided them through the USDA Value-Added Producer Grant (VAPG) application process. After an initial setback, they reapplied in 2023 and successfully received funding, setting the stage for growth and enhanced market outreach.
Tucker’s Black Angus Ranch
Veteran Justin Tucker and his wife Kelli began Tucker’s Black Angus Ranch in 2013 with a vision to provide high-quality, locally-raised Black Angus beef. Starting with just five pregnant cows, they steadily expanded, eventually opening a farm store with a walk-in freezer and building partnerships with local retailers and restaurants. By 2021, demand had grown, prompting them to explore expansion options.
Turning to the Canton SBDC, they worked with advisor Michelle Collins to apply for the USDA’s Value-Added Producer Grant. Although their first application was unsuccessful, they didn’t give up. With Michelle’s guidance, they refined their business plan and resubmitted the grant in 2023, securing funding to scale their operations. This support will allow Tucker’s Black Angus Ranch to increase production, reach new markets, and meet the needs of schools, retail stores, and more.
Certified as Homegrown by Heroes, Animal Welfare Approved, and New York State Grown & Certified, Tucker’s Black Angus Ranch continues to thrive, driven by the Tuckers’ commitment to quality and their partnership with the SBDC. Their story highlights the power of perseverance and the importance of having a dedicated advisor by their side.
“Working with Michelle Collins from the SBDC has been such a blessing. We’ve gained new skills and resources throughout this process, helping us stay focused and organized to achieve our goals.”
